Robert Michael "Mike" Spargo, Sr. Obituary

Gastonia, North Carolina

 

Robert Michael (Mike) Spargo, Sr. met his Lord and Savior face to face on October 13, 2024 at Atrium Main in Charlotte, NC. He was surrounded by his loving family members.

Mike was born on February 24, 1945 in Gastonia, NC to the late Howard Spargo and Daphne Jean Parrot Dellinger. He was also predeceased by his siblings Jud, Ron, and Charles (Chuck). Mike leaves behind the love of his life, Jayne Elmore Spargo. They were married on June 12, 1966 and enjoyed 58 blissful years together. He was the proud father of Robert Michael, Jr., Douglas Jason, and Matthew Elmore Spargo. Mike also leaves behind a daughters-in-law, Sherry Spargo, and former daughter-in-law, Allison Kennedy. He was an amazing PopPop to his grandchildren Emily (Angel), Blake (Beeker), Davis, and William Spargo. He enjoyed watching them play sports and especially loved attending their piano recitals. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews and Lisa (Liza) Elmore Gillespie, who he loved like a daughter.

Mike's quick wit and outgoing personality garnered him many friends. He was a member of the Y’s Guys, a group of men who enjoyed “exercising” at the YMCA and eating out several times a week. Mike was an avid tennis player and made many lifelong friends at Southampton Racquet Club.

Mike was a longtime member of First Baptist Church but most recently attended City Church. He had a booming voice and narrated many cantatas for churches and community events. He was a man of strong faith who loved his Lord and loved serving Him.

Mike was a successful entrepreneur, having owned several businesses. He was also known as the “Tomato Man”. He loved gardening and sharing his vegetables. He was a selfless man who received pleasure from making others happy.

A private service will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia, NC in the chapel. Pastor Dickie Spargo and Rev. Houston Matthews will speak words of faith and encouragement from God’s word. After the service, there will be a visitation at the funeral home from 12:00 until 1:00 PM. A Celebration of Love and Reception honoring this amazing man’s life will be held for family and friends at a later date.

Mike and I grew up in the same neighborhood and spent a lot of time together. I enjoyed his entreprenurial spirit. God bless your family.
